Thank you for your interest in the REACH app study. Below is a summary of what the study involves followed by some screening questions about your child to determine whether this study would be a good fit for your family. You are free to not answer any questions you do not wish to answer. If it turns out that the study is not a good fit, we will discard your answers to any of the questions we’ve asked.

Purpose of Study:

We are testing the effectiveness of a screening tool for identifying toddlers and preschoolers with autism. The screening tool is an investigational device called the REACH app and is administered via an iPhone for children between 12 and 36 months of age. You do not need to own an iPhone to participate. Your child does not need to have an autism diagnosis to participate in this study. Our goal is to include a representative sample of the general population, which means we need all kinds of children to participate.

What’s Involved:

If you/your child qualify, the study will involve a 45-minute visit to the University of Missouri Thompson Autism Center Research & Training Building. Approximately 30 minutes will be spent completing questionnaires about your child, and approximately 12 minutes will be spent completing the REACH app. Study visits are scheduled at your convenience.

After completing COVID screening and informed consent, we will ask you to fill out some brief questionnaires about your family and child. Then, we will ask you and your child to complete the REACH app. The app consists of a series of engaging videos and an interactive game administered via a mobile device. Your child will be seated on your lap and the iPhone will be placed on a tripod in front of you. While your child watches the videos, the phone will record both video and audio.

Participating families will receive $25 as compensation for their time and effort upon completion of the study.
