Thank you for your interest in the Social Cognitive and Addiction Neuroscience Lab (SCANlab), directed by Dr. Bruce Bartholow.

We invite highly motivated undergraduate students wanting to get involved in research to fill out this application to be considered for an upcoming term (fall, spring, or summer). We will reach out to you if you qualify for a lab opening.

Research conducted in the SCANlab is related to alcohol use/addiction, reward processing, and attention control. We encourage you to check out the list of publications on our lab website to see the kind of research being done in our lab: https://www.scanlab.page/publications. The following publications, in particular, are ongoing research projects that you could be directly involved in (click on the link to see the pdf):

Addiction/Alcohol Use area:

Reasearch Assistants (RA) in the SCANlab work closely with the research team (which includes faculty, research specialist, post-doctoral and doctoral students, and other research assistants).

RA duties include:

  • preparation of supplies and materials used in study tasks;
  • helping with running laboratory sessions and collecting electroencephalograms (EEG) from study participants;
  • data entry, data management and data validation
  • participant outreach (recruitment, retention)
  • tracking supply use; preparing inventory lists and reports;
  • maintaining work availability in a shared calendar;

Preference for the position will be given to students who:

  • have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • are able to commit at least 10 hours per week

Working in a psychology lab is a great way to learn what doing research is really like, to gain experience needed for applying to grad school or med school, and to learn unique skills that can be useful in students' future careers, whatever they might be.

This application has several pages and may take 15-30 minutes to fill out. You don't have to write long essays (one or two paragraphs is usually enough). You may save your progress and return later, however the application won't be complete until you reach the end.

Send an email to the SCANlab Research Coordinator, Mr. Liam Peck, at lcp6qt@umsystem.edu if the instructions are not clear or if something unexpected happens with the application.

Thank you!
